Possession of FRCPath in Haematology by examination is a mandatory requirement for
the award of the CCT in Haematology for UK trainees. It is also an accepted certificate for IMGs to get full GMC registration with a license to practise. This is
particularly useful for experienced overseas haematologists who wish to work in the UK and want to
get GMC registration without the need for more basic pathways like PLAB or MRCP.
The Overseas FRCPath exam in haematology is held in nearly 11 centres around the world. However, the pass rate for part 1 shows a
significant discrepancy between UK and non-UK centres, as shown in the performance report for 2019:
- Overall pass rate: 54.9%
- UK centres: 62.1%
- Non-UK centres: 30.8%
This discrepancy largely reflects the lack of orientation to the exam structure and the absence of
proper guidance and preparation. We are determined to change that by providing the necessary
guidance to all candidates taking the FRCPath exam in Haematology.
